If you do want to go commercial for some reason, then you can but T-nuts easily from Hare and Forbes or the usual discount outlets. Take some rod and thread part of it on both ends and thread it into the t-nut, then either weld the bottom through hole to secure it, or at least use red loctite. If you own a hacksaw and a file, you can make a t-nut. T-bolts aren't precision tools and can be made in two pieces if required. The head of a bolt is generally thinner, and without major modification to an oversize bolt, will not fit the slot well at all. SteveI would be careful about modifying any bolts as I've seen many tables broken out that way.
